Frederic and Edith Clements were husband and wife botanists and pioneering ecologists. Frederic (1874-1945) was educated at the University of Nebraska, receiving his Ph. D. in 1898. He taught at Nebraska from 1894-1907, was head of the University of Minnesota Botany Department from 1907-1917, and was a research associate at the Carnegie Institution of Washington from 1917 until his retirement in 1941. Frederic Edward Clements, a leading botanist of the early twentieth century, was born 16 September 1874 in Lincoln, Nebraska, the son of Ephraim George and Mary Angeline (Scoggin) Clements.
